76ERS-CELTICS

Rondo leads Celtics to 85-75 Game 7 win over 76ers

BOSTON (AP) Rajon Rondo had 18 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds and the Boston Celtics beat the Philadelphia 76ers 85-75 in Game 7 on Saturday night to advance to the Eastern Conference finals.

The Celtics will open the third round of the NBA playoffs in Miami against the Heat on Monday night.

Rondo scored nine straight Boston points after Paul Pierce fouled out with 4:16 left in the game, helping the Celtics turn a three-point edge into a double-digit lead.

Andre Iguodala scored 18 points, and Elton Brand and Jrue Holiday had 15 apiece for the 76ers, who eliminated the top-seeded Chicago Bulls in the first round but couldn't do the same with the Celtics.

CUBS-PIRATES

Pirates hand Cubs 11th straight loss with HBP

PITTSBURGH (AP) Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.

Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever.

Dolis had hit Josh Harrison earlier in the inning after Tabata had singled to lead off the ninth. Dolis also walked Neil Walker with two outs.

The punchless Cubs offense continued to struggle, managing six hits against Kevin Correia and three relievers. Closer Joel Hanrahan (2-0) had two strikeouts in a perfect ninth.

Alfonso Soriano homered and Starlin Castro had an RBI triple for the Cubs, who have scored eight runs in their past six games.

PHILLIES-CARDINALS

Phillies blank Cardinals 4-0 behind Kendrick

ST. LOUIS (AP) Kyle Kendrick threw a seven-hitter for his first career shutout, winning his first game of the season and putting the Philadelphia Phillies on the verge of their first four-game sweep in St. Louis in 26 years with a 4-0 victory on Saturday night.

Shane Victorino's RBI double in the fourth was the only support Kendrick (1-4) needed and John Mayberry added a two-run double in a three-run sixth. Hunter Pence and Brian Schneider added two hits apiece for the Phillies, who have won four in a row.

Kendrick entered with a 5.23 ERA and the Phillies were 1-9 in the games he pitched, five of them starts. But he's 5-1 against the Cardinals in eight games, all but two of them starts.

Jaime Garcia (3-3) allowed four runs on six hits in six innings for the Cardinals.

MLS-UNION-TORONTO

Toronto ends 9-game losing streak, 1-0 over Union

TORONTO (AP) Toronto FC ended its MLS record nine-game losing streak to open a season with a 1-0 win over the Philadelphia Union on a late goal by Danny Koevermans on Saturday.

Nick Soolsma outmuscled a Union defender in the box and fed the ball to Koevermans at the near post. The big Dutch striker's first attempt bounced off goalie Chris Konopka, but he scored on with his second try.

Koevermans came into the game in the 62nd minute, his third substitute appearances in four games since returning from a groin injury.

Toronto entered the game off a win against the Vancouver Whitecaps that game the club a fourth straight Voyageurs Cup as Canadian champion. Toronto has a three-week break due to the next round of World Cup qualifiers.

Philadelphia played without goalie Zac MacMath (concussion symptoms) and Chase Harrison (ankle sprain).

Toronto is 1-9-0; Philadelphia is 2-7-2.

PENN STATE-SALARIES

PSU's Paterno, Spanier each made over $1M in 2011

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) Penn State University has made public a report that shows fired football coach Joe Paterno and former president Graham Spanier each earned more than $1 million in compensation last year.

A form posted on the school's website lists Paterno's 2011 salary at $1,002,464. He earned another $35,546 in benefits. Spanier's salary is listed as $937,955, with another $168,630 in benefits.

The Centre Daily Times first reported the disclosure Saturday.

Both men were let go from their positions in early November after former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was charged with dozens of child sex abuse counts. He has denied the allegations and is to go on trial next month.

Paterno died in January of lung cancer.

PIAA TRACK-JAVELIN

South Park's Stanley sets national mark in javelin

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (AP) South Park High School senior Bill Stanley has had a record-setting day at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.

Stanley set a National Federation of High Schools and PIAA record in the javelin. On his first throw, Stanley unleashed a toss of 246 feet, 9 inches. That's the best high school toss since the javelin was re-weighted in 2002. The effort broke the mark of 244-2 set by Sam Crouser of Gresham High School in Oregon in 2010.

The throw by the Ohio State-bound Stanley easily eclipsed the PIAA meet record of 224-2 by Cedar Crest's Thomas Jordan in 2003.

NFHS and PIAA records are only recognized in state championship meets.
