Jackson-Denise Taylor-Travis says she was fired after claiming inequity.
Taylor-Travis coached 10 seasons of the Jackson State Women's basketball team. School officials fired her last June. Her lawyer, Louis Watson, says school officials said she was fired over claims of harassment, violation of policy, misuse of funds, and not complying with school standards.
However, Watson believes his client was really fired after she claimed school officials violated the Title IX ammendment by giving more funding to men's sports. Taylor-Travis also claimed she could not go certain conventions that her male colleagues attended.
Watson says his client sent an e-mail to the school's president and was fired shortly after. He also claims that his client's contract outlines justifiable reasons to terminate employment and none of the reasons were met. Taylor-Travis says since that time, she's been volunteering as a coach for her young son's basketball team.
The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court. Watson says a trial jury will determine how much money his client is owed. His lawsuit includes back pay, legal fees, and emotional pain and suffering.
Jackson State administrators say they cannot comment on pending and current litigation.
