The leasing office at a South Jackson apartment complex is closed. The Hinds County Tax Collector tells us the owner of the Highland Square Apartments owes more than 29-thousand dollars in personal property taxes. And, he hasn't been paying taxes since 2005. At the end of this month, if the taxes aren't paid, there will be a one-percent penalty added to the total.
We’re told the owner also owes about a half-million dollars in real estate taxes. If the money isn't paid by the last Monday in August, the apartment complex will be sold at auction.
"Most people I’ve talked with are outraged and upset," recalls a tenant.
Candice Bracy has lived in these apartments for about seven months.
"For the people who stay out here, this is what our money can afford. We all pay you over 450-dollars a month. Why are there taxes not being paid," asks Bracy.
Hinds County Tax Collector Eddie Fair explains tenants are still allowed to live in their units. But, the owner is not allowed to use the leasing office.
Q: Even though the leasing office is closed, they can still be outside on property collecting the rent?
A: "We can't stop that. We can just stop them from using the office," comments Fair.
As for the renters, many of them are ready to pack up and leave.
"I’m thinking about it, but I don't know how I’ll afford to move right now. I just moved six months ago," adds Sherwyn Hyder.
Hinds County Sheriff’s deputies seized the building Tuesday on orders from the Tax Collector's office.
