Possible State Law On High-Speed Chases

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Canton- Rep. Ed Blackmon wants lawmakers to have say in chases.Right now, each law enforcement agency is allowed to come up with its own pursuit policy.

Blackmon says he's been pushing for a state law for the past decade, but lawmakers kept rejecting his proposed bill. Blackmon says if a high-speed chase crosses jurisdictions, the agency that originated the chase should be the point-of-contact for all involved agencies and that agencies should decide when the pursuit should stop.

Blackmon says he would also like all agencies to have similar communications equipment. He says many agencies are not on the same frequency and that can cause a problem when several agencies are involved in a high-speed chase.

Blackmon says he doesn't plan to introduce another bill this legislative session, but he says he will in the near future.
