Monitor Your Sodium Intake

»  Comments | Post a Comment

It turns out the biggest source of sodium in the adult American diet comes from an unlikely source -- bread!

A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says nine out of 10 adult Americans eat too much salt each day.

It issued a list of 10 foods that account for more than 40-percent of salt intake. After breads and rolls, deli lunch meats came in second, followed by pizza. Soup was five; snack foods such as pretzels and potato chips were 10th.

Some of the foods are not high in sodium, but eating multiple servings raises levels.

So what's the big deal with salt? Well, high sodium levels increase blood pressure, putting people at higher risk for heart disease and stroke.
