The special election for the Rankin County bond issue cost taxpayers nearly 68-thousand dollars. On Sept. 3, the majority of voters in the school district said ‘no’ to a nearly 170-million dollar bond referendum. Now, the school district is trying to find out their next move.
As parents and students gathered at the Brandon high school football game, one issue remains on their minds: the Rankin County bond.
"I was disappointed it didn't pass," expresses Patricia Fortenberry.
She believes the money would have been well spent.
"I believe they need the extra athletics and programs and facilities the bond issue would provide," continues Fortenberry.
Hap Bruce says the reason why he did not support the bond referendum was because 10-million dollars of it was supposed to go toward building new sport facilities for Brandon High School.
"I’m all about academics. I think that's what school is about and athletics should be secondary," explains Bruce.
Paula Lawson also voted ‘no’ to the bond issue.
"I thought there were too many other agendas," recalls Lawson.
But, if another bond referendum gets back on the ballot, Lawson says, she would change her vote, if changes were made.
"I definitely believe we need adequate facilities, not necessarily a new football stadium," adds Lawson.
Rankin County's last bond vote was in 2001 for 69-million dollars. It passed with nearly 82-percent of the vote.
