Holiday Shopping

»  Comments | Post a Comment

You know all about “Black Friday?”  Some are calling today "Black Monday."  Stores across the country and here at home have been packed all day with customers making returns and exchanges or hoping to cash in on some good deals.  Retailers like Dillard’s at Northpark Mall have extended hours and have additional staff working to handle the crowds.

"Today has been a hectic day, very busy," recalls the Dillard’s store manager.

George Tanner says they are doing everything they can to keep people walking through their doors.

"Most of the store is 50-percent off.  We do cash in.  I think a lot of people get gift cards as gifts and they take advantage of the sales," explains Tanner.

Target is also seeing a boost in sales.  When asked what she was returning, Elain Bunger replied, “Christmas presents that he gave me.  It was a really nice frying pan, but it was way too big and a CD that I got double on.”

"I’m returning my son's pants.  They were a size too large," adds Michael Gates.

Gates also plans to do a little shopping, since Santa didn't get him everything on his list.

"Madden 12 and the Michael Jackson Experience for Wii," continues Gates.

Brianna McField didn't have any returns.  But, she got a little cash in her stocking, and she's eager to spend it.

"Clothing and jewelry, like dress pants, dresses, nice shirts," McField tells News Channel 12.

Many shoppers tell us they are choosing small businesses instead of major retailers.  The manager of Silver Gallery in Jackson says her store competes with bigger retailers by trying to offer better customer service.

"I think when you go to the bigger store people get lost in the crowd and here we give them loving, tender care and if you need us we're here,” continues Stephanie Donaldson.

According to the National Retail Federation, holiday sales nationwide are up almost four-percent from last year.
