Toyota's US sales drop 6 Percent in March

»  Comments | Post a Comment

DETROIT (AP) - Toyota Motor Corp. says its U.S. sales fell 5.7 percent in March, as it lowered discounts and saw the availability of some cars limited by the earthquake in Japan.

Sales were expected to be down from last March, when Toyota offered sweetened deals to win back buyers after a series of safety recalls. TrueCar.com estimated Toyota's incentives fell 23 percent compared with last March.

But availability of some cars may also have been an issue. Sales of the Prius hybrid jumped 52 percent, as some buyers anticipated shortages of the car because of production slowdowns in Japan. Toyota resumed Prius production earlier this week, but many plants are still down.
