Gladys and Jamie Scott are currently serving life sentences for their roles in a 1993 armed robbery. A Scott County jury found them guilty of robbing two men at gunpoint and stealing $11. Their sentences have sparked major protests across the country.
The State Parole Board is now preparing a recommendations for Governor Haley Barbour regarding clemency for the sisters. Their attorney, Chokwe Lumumeba, hopes the governor will make his decision before the new year. He says a major factor would be that the sisters have already served 16 years behind bars and have more than fulfilled their debts to society.
Governor Haley Barbour has granted clemency four times during his term. All were for men involved in murders. Two men were Caucasian, and two men were African-American.
