The battle over millions of dollars needed to fix Jackson’s crumbling water system could come up at a legislative special session Governor Barbour called for the end of the week.
Area lawmakers held a news conference at the Capitol Wednesday urging the governor and other members of the bond commission to approve a $6 million loan to pay for improvements to the water pipes and system in and around the capitol complex.
The legislature approved the funds this past session, but the bond commission has not yet voted to sell the bonds.
The special session gets underway Friday morning, when lawmakers are to take up a $50 million bond issue for an economic development project.
One legislator says it’s possible the new bond issue could be held up until the city gets the promised funds.
A spokesman for the governor tells us, the bond commission won't likely approve the $6 million
request until Jackson leaders first pursue other options for the money.
