A group of metro area-churches are gearing up for their monthly distribution of discounted food to struggling families.
The food items are collected by a national non-profit church group known as Angel Food Ministries.
This month's food pick-up is scheduled for next weekend at Clinton’s Dayspring Community Church, which organizes and hosts the event for the Jackson area.
Dacia Amis is the Angel Food coordinator for Dayspring.
She says buying food at a discounted price helps seniors on a fixed income make ends meet.
“And we also have a lot of young families or single mothers with children who really need to watch every dime,” she says.
Dayspring Associate Pastor Jim Joyce says the box of food is worth $65 to $80 but through Angel Food you pay only $30.
The food program isn't limited to struggling families or the unemployed who may have little money to spend.
“It's for anybody who values their dollar if you can save money on food you will have more money to spend elsewhere,” Amis says.
