New Human West Nile Virus Case Reported In The State

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi State Department of Health reports one additional human case of West Nile virus for 2009, bringing the state's total to 47 with four deaths. The new case is in Quitman County. The MSDH reports both confirmed and probable cases to the public. Since July 2009, WNV cases have been reported in Clay, DeSoto, Forrest (8), Harrison (7), Hinds (7), Lamar (2), Lee (3), Leflore, Marion (2), Marshall, Monroe, Neshoba, Pearl River, Prentiss, Quitman, Rankin (7), and Washington (2) counties. Two cases of St. Louis encephalitis have been reported in
Forrest County. The Board of Animal Health has reported two cases of WNV in horses, one each in Harrison and Lafayette counties. In 2008, there were 65 confirmed cases of the mosquito-borne
illness in the state with three deaths.
