Organizing Against Proposed University Merger

Organizing Against Proposed University Merger

Enlisting the world wide web to fight proposed university merger

The state college is taking no position on whether it supports Governor Barbour's proposed merger of the state's three historically black universities.
During the board's Thursday morning meeting.
IHL Commissioner Dr. Hank Bounds said even if there are no mergers, universities may have to raise students’ tuition to cover lost tax dollars because of deep budget cuts.
Bounds says another way to save money could be reducing faculty, staff pay and adding furlough days.
The proposed merger has sparked intense outcry from supporters of Alcorn, and Mississippi Valley State, both of which the governor wants to consolidate with Jackson State University.
While a final decision on merging is still months away, supporters are getting organized.
Some have set up an account on Twitter and started an on-line petition called “Stop the Merger.” Hundreds of people have already logged on to sign up and have their voices heard.
