--NO DATELINE-- -- The state has taken complete control of the troubled Hazlehurst School District.
On Monday, the State Department of Education plans to begin the process of removing the district's five school board members. Two of the board members are elected. The other three are appointed.
State Superintendent of Education Dr. Hank Bounds said he has taken the necessary steps to make sure children in the district are served.
"We have assigned a conservator, and we are sending between 10 and 20 staff members in there everyday," said Bounds.
"It's a good thing they're taking over. I believe it's a better thing," said Rachel Davis, a parent with children in the Hazelhurst schools.
Davis has three children in the Hazelhurst School District -- one each in the elementary, middle and high schools. The long-time Hazelhurst resident said she graduated from the same high school but lately things have changed.
"I went here for my senior year in '89 and it wasn't like that then. They said four years ago, it wasn't like that. It just got like that," said Davis.
According to the Department of Education, Hazlehurst High School was at a level 4 just four years ago. But now, things have changed so much that Davis' children don't want to go to school in the district anymore.
"They really asked me to transfer them to another school. They said they really don't want to go to this school no more," said Davis.
The mother said the Department of Education taking over the schools is a step in the right direction -- a step that will challenge her children in class.
"bet you it'll help them study better because they ain't playing with them. The state ain't going to play with them the way the public playing with them," said Davis.
