We think we speak for all kids when we say that lunches in our cafeterias should be healthier. In fact, most kids don’t eat or even get the healthy food items. If the cafeteria served healthier meals that kids would eat and love, it would make us happy and healthier, thus making more income for the school.
One of the meals we know a lot of kids love is salads. The salad could come in a clear box about the size of a regular tray. Half of it could be filled with salad and the other half could be filled with empty spaces to hold sides. The sides could be a can of tuna, chicken, or ham. Vegetable sides could be cucumbers, tomatoes, and cauliflower. Pickles and eggs could also be added as sides.
One of the unhealthiest desserts, which every kid gets in the cafeteria, is ice cream. Healthier choices that even taste better are sherbert and frozen yogurt. Sherbert is ten times better than ice cream. Not only does it taste better, but is healthier for you. Frozen yogurt tastes exactly the same as ice cream, but of course is healthier.
A lot of people, including us, have complained about the previously cooked foods in our cafeteria. You might ask why we complain about this. Well, the thought of our food being cooked, frozen, and then heated up sounds bad and is unhealthy. It can also cause freezer burn, which wastes food. There is no point in having a stove and oven if we are eating pre-cooked foods. If we received fresh food, it would taste better, be more nutritious, not get freezer burn, and save money.
This is why we think food at our school is unhealthy. If we could change just a few lunches in our school, the number of obese children could drop substantially. Who knows! If all Mississippi schools do this one little thing, we could become the healthiest state! What we are trying to say is we need healthier choices in our lunchrooms.
