Water Works!

Did you know that humans can survive up to three weeks without food but only a matter of three days without water? Yes, water is essential. In fact, it’s nature’s best drink. Though eating the right foods is certainly important, many people have a tendency to forget about the importance of drinking water when trying to maintain a healthy diet. According to the Healthy Life Journal, drinking water is the single most important thing we can do to live a healthier life. Therefore, our class has made a simple commitment to drink plenty of water each day. This change is inexpensive and easy for us to maintain. Also, the benefits of just drinking more water each day are simply amazing! Drinking water will help us perform better, stay fit, and feel good.
First, how well children are performing is a major concern. Lake Elementary already has some great programs in place to ensure that we are living healthy and performing at our maximum. For example, we are always engaged in some sort of physical fitness activity and each day we receive either a fresh fruit or vegetable as an afternoon healthy snack. Our cafeteria staff is great! For lunch, they prepare salads as a healthy option each day and work to serve foods with less fat and salt. The academic and physical performance of students is always of high interest at our school. Adding water to our diet will give us maximum performance. Many people know that drinking water will help rid our bodies of health complications caused by dehydration, joint pains, high blood pressure, and digestion problems. Do they realize that drinking water will also help students retain important information needed to be successful in school? People who do not drink enough water suffer from memory loss. The brain is an organ that never rests and must stay hydrated to continue producing new brain cells and working to its full potential. The body is a machine that works powerful when it has plenty of water.
In addition to high achievement, drinking water will help us lose weight. Drinking water will help curb our appetites and keep us from overeating. Our bodies will no longer store fat but will begin to work better at turning our fat into energy. We will also maintain a youthful appearance and feel refreshed and rejuvenated just by drinking water.
Most importantly, the number one reason we have pledged to drink water is because our body needs it. In addition to the brain, the muscles that move our body are 75 percent water. The blood that transports nutrients throughout our body is 82 percent water. The lungs that provide our oxygen are comprised of 90 percent water. Even our bones are 25 percent water. Some may ask, “Since the body is made up of so much water, then why do we need to drink more?” The body is like a car. Gas is to a vehicle as water is to the body. Just as a car uses gas and needs to be refueled, the human body constantly loses water and must be replenished. The average person loses about three to four liters of water a day. In a week, that’s a lot of water! Simple daily actions such as breathing, sweating, crying, and even talking causes us to lose water. If water is not put back in, our bodies will shut down. In our class, we realize that water is not just a healthy supplement; it’s a requirement.
Drinking water is not only our single class change, but our best choice toward living a healthier life. From now on, in addition to eating the right foods and exercising, we will operate on a full tank each day by doing what’s natural: drinking water. Why water? Why not? Drinking water delivers an abundance of health benefits.
