Mrs. Culpepper’s fifth grade class at John Hopkins Elementary has taken the challenge to become healthier by making one change in our daily life. Since we, as fifth grade students, have very little control over the food we eat, we have chosen to adopt the U. S. Department of Human and Health Service’s motto – “Get up and play an hour a day” and put more physical activity in our daily routines. This will take self-discipline and a little creativity to keep it fun.
Our state has the “Let’s go walking” campaign. Walking can help you manage your weight and provide a good aerobic workout, which is good for your heart. If you think walking is boring, get someone to walk with you. Grab a partner, take a walk and have a talk.
Sometimes you may want to organize a basketball game or a bike ride with friends. A game of friendly competition can improve your skills and provide physical exercise. You could have so much fun that the hour will pass fast.
Inside activity can be just as fun as outside activities. If it is raining or too cold, you could turn on your favorite radio station and dance. You could also learn the latest dance moves watching music videos, or create your own new moves.
Choosing to be physically active is something we can control. We are choosing to be more physically active to promote our healthier lifestyle. Whether we’re walking, playing an outdoor game, or simply dancing to our favorite music we’re choosing to become healthier. We hope that we set an example that others will follow. We choose to “Get up and play an hour a day”.
