Mrs. Roberts’ 4th grade class from Brookhaven Elementary School in Brookhaven, Mississippi accepts Rachael Ray’s challenge of “Living Healthier Lives”. We plan to begin by planting a classroom garden. Our garden will consist of tomatoes, roses, and marigolds.
Tomatoes are being planted for the students to discover their ability to harvest their own fresh fruits and vegetables. As well as, get students intrigued and active in pursuing healthy eating habits. Our hopes are the tomatoes will be ready by the end of the school year and the children will experience the flavor of the tomatoes in the tasting of fresh salsa made from the fruits of their labor.
Roses will be planted to spread beauty and provide joy to those who see them. The students chose roses so they could share them with others in our school or community who need a “pick me up”. A smile is contagious. When you are happy, you feel good! And feeling good is a great outcome of a healthy lifestyle.
Marigolds will be planted as a help mate to our garden. The students have learned that marigolds may not smell good, but their unpleasant fragrance is a deterrent to mosquitoes and other harmful insects. Marigolds are a metaphor to the hard work and dedication of exercise. It may not always be pleasant ,but the benefits are priceless.
In closing, our classroom garden will get students up, out and active! Learning across the curriculum, from Math, Science, Health, Reading, and Language, will be promoted in a fun, hands-on project that students will remember and hopefully motivate them to permanently live a healthier lifestyle.
