SFA junior Jordan Glynn laid in a missed tip-in with 1.1 seconds left to give SFA a 62-61 over Jackson State in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. SFA trailed by five (61-56) with 1:46 to play, but scored the final six points of the game, with Glynn accounting for the last five. They were his only points of the contest.
The win evens SFA’s record at 1-1 and keeps the ‘Jacks undefeated in home openers under 10th-year head coach Danny Kaspar. The Lumberjacks have now won 15 straight games in Johnson Coliseum dating to the home finale of the 2007-08 campaign.
Jackson State (0-3) led, 61-60, when Garrison Johnson missed the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity. Sophomore center Jereal Scott cleared the rebound for SFA. After a Lumberjack timeout, SFA used nearly all of the remaining 32 seconds before working the ball down low to Glynn. He missed his first attempt, but junior guard Eddie Williams soared in for his seventh offensive rebound of the night. His tip-in attempt was too strong, but Glynn grabbed the loose ball and laid it in with 1.1 remaining to set the final margin.
Johnson got off a desperation 3-pointer at the other end, but it banged harmlessly off the backboard.
After six first-half lead changes, Jackson State took a 32-25 advantage to the locker room. The Tigers led by as many as 10 in the second period, and SFA didn’t hold a second-half lead until Glynn’s game-winner rolled into the cylinder.
Williams finished with a team-high 19 points on 9-of-15 shooting. He led all players with nine rebounds and tied for game-high honors with three assists in 39 minutes of action. Scott and senior guard Walt Harris joined Williams in double digits with 13 points apiece.
Garrison finished with 18 for the Tigers, who were led by 20 points from forward Tyrone Hanson. Hanson also hauled down six rebounds to tie with Cason Burk for the team lead.
Saturday’s meeting was the first of two showdowns between SFA and Jackson State this season. The two will get together again on Dec. 1 in Jackson, Miss.
