Hood Reacts To Budget Crisis

Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood says his office is drafting an opinion that would give guidance to state agencies in the event that a budget is not reached.  He says some agencies, like the Department of of Public Safety, could be in jeopardy of shutting down.

“I don’t anticipate that happening, but I don’t want people to misunderstand that everything is going to be fine because it’s not,“ he said.  “I just hope the governor comes to his senses.“

Hood says the attorney general in Kentucky was forced to sue the governor there after he tried to take control without a budget.  He says Kentucky’s State Supreme Court ruled a governor has no such emergency authority.
