JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour on Tuesday nominated two people to the nine-member state Board of Education.
Sue Matheson, superintendent of the Pass Christian schools, was chosen for a term that ends June 30, 2014. She replaces David Sistrunk of Kosciusko.
Kami Bumgarner, an English and social studies teacher at Madison Middle School in Madison, was chosen for a term that ends June 30, 2018. She replaces Sondra Parker Caillavet of Biloxi.
The nominations must be confirmed by the state Senate, but Barbour’s office said the appointments took effect immediately. Nominees routinely serve weeks or months without confirmation if the Senate is not in session.
