Ole Miss Wants To Do Away With ‘The South Will Rise Again’ Chant At Football Games

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The University of Mississippi wants to rid its football games of the chant, “The South will rise again.“
Ole Miss Chancellor Dan Jones said he’s received complaints from alumni that the slogan is offensive. He recently asked the school’s band director to modify the tune in a way that would discourage the chants that usually come at the song’s end. Earlier this month, the Ole Miss Associated Student Body passed a resolution suggesting the chant be replaced by the phrase, “To hell with LSU.“
Jones said he made his request to support the efforts of the student association. He said the chant only became a custom at the games within the last five years.
