JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Cleanup efforts have begun after weekend storms ripped through Mississippi leaving one dead, eight homes destroyed and dozens more damaged.
Homes and businesses in at least 15 counties received damage from the severe weather system that brought strong winds, heavy rains and flash flood warnings to much of Mississippi.
Sunday’s storms spawned possible tornadoes from Mississippi to Georgia and killed a woman in Laurel who was hit by a tree while she stood outside her home. Jones County Coroner Nancy Barnett identified the victim as 46-year-old Kimberly Bellais.
Another person in Jones County was injured.
The severe weather began Saturday when at least five homes in Mantachie in Itawamba County were damaged by high winds that tore through around 2 p.m.
A spokeswoman for Entergy reports that just under 1,600 customers are without power in Brookhaven. Just under 1,300 are out in Natchez. Entergy says the majority of its customers should have power restored by Monday night. The remaining few should have their power restored by Tuesday afternoon. At the height of the storm on Sunday afternoon more than 23,000 people were without power.
