Attorneys Expected To Question Potential Jurors In The Carla Hughes Murder Trial
Published: September 29, 2009
The prosecution and the defense will question potential jurors in the Carla Hughes capital murder trial Wednesday. Jury selection began Monday at the Madison County Circuit Courthouse and continued Tuesday. In Wednesday’s one-on-one meetings attorneys are expected to ask potential jurors about their thoughts on the death penalty and being sequestered.
On Tuesday the judge and the attorneys cut another 6 potential jurors from the pool. There are still 87 left. Defense attorneys tell us they’d hoped to have a jury seated by Friday, but at this rate the process may last until Monday.
Hughes is on trial for the November 2006 murders of Avis Banks, 27, and Banks’ unborn son. Banks was 5 months pregnant when she was found shot and stabbed in the garage of her Ridgeland home. If convicted, Hughes could get the death penalty.
