Tuition Assistance Cut For MS students

Tuition financial assistance has been slashed for 21,000 students at Mississippi’s eight public universities as the schools try to deal with reduced funding from the state. Gov. Haley Barbour has made two rounds of cuts to state agencies totaling $200 million. In addition to millions taken from the budgets of the state’s eight public universities, the cuts include more than $1 million taken from the state’s budget for financial aid. Interim Higher Education Commissioner Aubrey Lucas said Wednesday that the 21,000 students in the Mississippi Tuition Assistance Grant program will see assistance drop an average of $43 this semester. MTAG pays up to $500 a school year for freshmen and sophomores
and $1,000 for juniors and seniors.
