Ward 1 residents speak out on issues
With nice green lawns and tree lined streets, many neighborhoods in ward one seem like a far cry from the problems plaguing other parts of the capital city. But crime is here too.
“Crime is always going to be at the top of the agenda,” says Brian Herrington.
He moved from northeast Jackson from Madison and is worried most about break-ins.
“I’ve had several things stolen from my garage and that concerns me because I have small children and you never know when a property crime may escalate into something more,” he says.
John Hester says “If something happens in another part of the city it could happen anywhere.”
Police say auto break-ins are a major concern here, but few violent crimes are reported here in northeast Jackson.
Still Hester says “It’s important to see the city as a whole and not just as your area.”
In addition to fighting crime, Ward 1 residents want to see roads paved and greater accountability from City Hall.
In the May 5th primary Jonathan Jones is challenging incumbent Jeff Weill.
Both are Republicans. There are no Democrats running in that race.
So whoever wins the primary will serve in the post the next four years.
