Supporting Farish Street
One Jackson organization says Mississippians need to overlook the stereotypes to help boost the area.Despite the deadly shooting that happened Sunday at the “Birdland” restaurant and lounge on Farish Street, the Jackson Progressives Group still supports the redeveloping area.
“The bad reputation comes from isolated incidents,“ said Funmi Franklin. “The entire street is not a bad street, and the more people that come out here and are positive, that are here for the right reasons, want to socialize, bring good business, and good energy out here…we won’t have a problem.“
Franklin and her friend Deborah Rae Wright, who is also a member of the group, eat at Peaches every Wednesday to support the restaurant that’s in a struggling area.
“jackson as a whole would be a much better place if everyone participated in all of Jackson,“ said Wright. “I am definitely pro-Jackson.“
The owner of Watkins Development tells us they plan to start construction on the entertainment district in the next three weeks. He expects the first new business to open next May.
