According to the American Cancer Society, more than seven million people die from cancer each year.
And many Mississippians are working to see that number go down.
“Spin For A Cure For Cancer” was held Saturday at the Northeast Courthouse Racquet and Fitness Club on Northtown Drive.
About 180 people formed teams and hopped on bikes to spin for a cure.
Each team donated about $200.
The money raised will go to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society for research and patient support programs.
Darryl Lehtola was one participant.
He says he has memories spinning through his mind while he rides—- of family members he lost to cancer.
“I’m trying to block out the pain a little bit…i think about them….help them…anything can help,“ Lehtola said.
It may be a long ride until a cure is found, but many hope spinning will help others realize how deadly cancer can be.
“I hope it brings attention, to the fact that we still need more money to invest and help find a cure,“ said participant Karen Root.
