Officer Shot: One Year Later
Dewayne Collier doesn’t even remember the shooting that almost took his life one year ago this day.
“I remember what happened because people tell me, I don’t even remember going to work that day,” said the Jackson police officer.
On July 7th of last year Collier was shot and critically wounded while trying to stop two men accused of a robbing a Popeyes Chicken restaurant on Clinton Boulevard.
Collier spent weeks in the hospital and months enduring physical therapy
Despite the injuries he suffered in the shooting, Officer Collier remains upbeat.
“It’s no such thing as things in life bringing you down, you bring yourself down, it’s something that happened and I have to deal with it.”
Right now Collier still undergoes therapy three days each week.
“For my arms hands and legs and my talking because I had a stroke,” he says
Although the last 12 months have been a struggle, Collier’s wife, Carmela is trusting God to answer her prayers.
“Which is for him to heal and for us to grow stronger as a family,” she says.
Cornelius Black and Antonio Turner both are charged with aggravated assault in the case.
They are scheduled to go on trial next month.
