The head of the Teamsters Union releases a statement saying First Student bus drivers in Hinds County will go on strike Thursday morning at 4. The bus drivers met Wednesday at noon. Shortly after the meeting, the strike was announced. According to the Union President, “A strike is not what we want, but we are being forced to do this by First Student and Hinds County School Board.“ The drivers are in dispute over wage and benefit increases. Drivers we’ve talked with say they just want to be treated fairly. The Teamsters will not strike in Clay, Madison, and Yazoo counties at this time. The Hinds County School District held a press conference Wednesday at 3 p.m. where district leaders announced a tentativley scheduled list of pick up and delivery points for bus service. Congratulations Drivers for standing up!  I am a proud parent of two children that attend Hinds County Schools. Though it is a huge inconvenience for me; I am 100% behind the bus drivers. Have you ever tried to drive with your child acting up in the car?  Then you know how difficult it is to drive safely when things are going on behind you.  Now multiply that and you would know what these drivers have to deal with everyday.  Yes the economy is bad; yes they are thankful to have a job.  But, is that any reason to sit down and let a company treat you unfairly?

People standing up for themselves- that’s what these bus drivers are doing. Unlike those who are afraid and scared of taking a stand, these workers are asking that First Student workers in Hinds County be given comparable wages to workers in the same state performing the same job for the same company providing professional driver safety for the kids and their families.

I know everyone would like more money and I am not saying the drivers don’t deserve it.  However they should be thankful they do have a job right now I have been trying to gain
Employment since I lost my job the first of September and nothing has happened.  If they go on strike I hope the school district don’t hire any of them to drive for them again and since that would mean they can’t draw unemployment (or should not be able to anyway) let them feel what is really like to have no money.

People need to stop crying, and just be happy they have a job. Everyone is having to make budget cuts and lay people off. Many people will take those jobs at that pay and be grateful. Asking for more money and benifits does nothing but make it worse. Suck it up and deal with it at least your working.
