Fireworks Safety

It only takes one explosion for fireworks to turn deadly.
“We definitely want to stress the urgency of being safe,“ said Jackson Fire Chief R.D. Simpson.
That’s why Chief Simpson says it’s important to follow the instructions before lighting fireworks.
“One thing that we get a lot of is people holding bottle rockets in their hands while they’re going off,“ said Chief Simpson.
Chief Simpson suggests standing several feet away after any fireworks start sparking, and never wear loose clothes when lighting fireworks because they can catch fire easily.
Chief Simpson says lighting fireworks in grassy areas is also dangerous.
“We’ve had hot, dry and humid weather and we’ve had a lot of dead grass out there,“ said Chief Simpson. “When you’re popping those firecrackers you don’t think about that the grass is dead and it will catch on.“
Instead, Chief Simpson says it’s better to ignite fireworks on cement areas.
Keeping these tips about fireworks in mind will help your Fourth of July celebrations stay safe.
Water on hand is a necessity anytime you light fireworks, but particularly now when it’s so hot and dry in the area.
