JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A state Department of Education spokesman says Tom Burnham, who served as Mississippi’s superintendent of education in the mid-1990s, has been chosen to return to the job. Pete Smith says the state Board of Education named Burnham on Tuesday after interviewing four candidates.
Burnham will succeed Hank Bounds, who left the position during the summer to become Mississippi higher education commissioner. John Jordan has been acting superintendent. Smith says Burnham is currently dean of the School of Education at the University of Mississippi. He served as state education
superintendent from 1992-1997. Smith says Burnham will start by the end of the year.
