The building process begins for Mississippi’s newest city. Monday Byram’s new leaders were sworn in at the state capitol. Byram’s new mayor is Nick Tremonte. Along with Tremonte, five Board of Aldermen were also confirmed. Mayor Tremonte said they have a long list of tasks they need to tackle. Among them, setting a budget, setting up tax structure and creating a plan for providing city services. “We’ll see organizational changes immediately, physical changes will have to fall in line like everything else,“ said Tremonte. Tremonte said the Hinds County Sheriff Department will continue to patrol Byram for now. “When the time comes we’ll have a full time fire depart and when the times comes we’ll have a full time law enforcement department,“ said the Mayor. To speed up the process the Mayor is looking to Attorney Jerry Mills. “The first step is to take some organizations steps which would include setting a meeting,“ said Mills. Mills said Byram city leaders need to talk to Byram residents. “We want to start with full and complete compliance with open meetings, with open records and policies, just a number of house keeping items.“ The Mayor said taxes will go up. How much depends on what the people want. “We’ll give them you whatever you’re willing to pay for in your taxes. If you want the stripe down the street to be gold then we’ll do that if you’re willing to pay for it.“
The Mayor and Board of Aldermen are organizing a public meeting which will be held for residents this Thursday.
