Hughes Murder Trial
Ridgeland, MS -- The murder trial for a former teacher accused of killing a Ridgeland woman and her unborn baby is delayed until June. Madison County's new District Attorney Michael Guest says he will request a continuance in the Carla Hughes murder trial. He says the Hughes' trial is a top priority for his office. We will have live reports on News Channel 12 at Noon, 5 and 6.
Carla Hughes is charged with two counts of capital murder. One for the deaths of Avis Banks, the other for Banks' unborn son. Hughe is being held without bond at the Madison County jail. Banks was killed in the garage of her Ridgeland home in November of 2006. She was shot five times and stabbed in the face and neck. Avis Banks shared the home with her fiance' Keyon Pittman. While Pittman admits having an affair with Carla Hughes, police say he's not a suspect. Both Pittman and Hughes taught at Chastain Middle School.
