New Jackson Leaders Sworn In
New Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson says he is ready to get down to business.
After taking the oath of office during Friday’s inauguration celebration, Johnson laid out his plans for the city’s future.
In a 10 minute address to hundreds at the Convention Complex, Johnson vowed to aggressively fight crime and work to prevent violence in the city by hiring new police officers and training every
officer how to do their job better.
And he wants to tackle poverty and boost economic development.
“The challenges of our city are serious and they are real they will not be met easily but know this Jackson they will be met.”
Some who heard the speech came way impressed with the Johnson’s goals.
“He has a lot of confidence but he knows we have a lot to do but I think he’s up to the job,” says Carol McNulty.
Melvin Evans says, “The speech really kind of energized everybody.”
Johnson admits his goals will be costly. He says he will move incrementally to improve the lives of people all across the city.
Two new city council member and five returning members were also sworn in. Next week the new leaders will officially begin their jobs.
