Living Healthier Lives
What single change could our class make to insure everyone lives a healthier life? As we discussed this as a class many ideas were brought up. Increasing our exercise was a change that many students proposed. When we asked the class we found that many students already got quite a bit of physical activity, so we thought that wouldn’t create the most dramatic change. However, when we talked in length what we were eating every day, it was obvious how some of us needed to make changes in our eating habits.
Students eat way too much sugar. When huge amounts of sugar are consumed people can gain weight and, something that effects many people in Mississippi, develop diabetes. Diabetes is a terrible disease that can cause blindness and death. Students should drink more water than juice and other sweetened drinks. Students should eat healthy vegetable and fruit snacks instead of eating large amounts of candy and sweets.
Young people in Mississippi also eat too much fat and salt. Potato chips and other salty snacks lead to people being overweight and being unhealthy. Eating apples, oranges, grapes, peaches and pears are better choices for snacks. Carrots are terrific for your eyes.
There are two ways that we could have better eating habits at school. The first would be for the cafeteria to offer more salads. Students would choose those more often if they were available every day. Another way would be for the class to grow a garden. Not only would this be a super fun project but we could also grow healthy treats for each other. I know we could do it!
