Montgomery May Require Pregnancy Clinic Disclaimer

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) Montgomery County officials have proposed a regulation that would require anti-abortion pregnancy centers to give women a disclaimer.

Such centers often bill themselves as places to get information about abortion, but they try to steer women away from the procedure. Abortion rights advocates say the pregnancy centers provide biased and inaccurate information.

A similar measure is under consideration in Baltimore.

Backers of the regulation say it's about consumer protection. The disclaimer would say information provided by the centers "is not intended to be medical advice."

A hearing is scheduled for Dec. 1.

But Jacqueline Stippich, executive director of the Shady Grove Pregnancy Center, says anti-abortion organizations are being unfairly singled out.
