CHICAGO (AP) - He wasn't with them at the beginning. And his
health caused him to retire from performing in 1996. But during his
time with the Isley Brothers, Marvin Isley used his bass guitar to
help shape the group's distinctive sound. Marvin has died at a
Chicago hospital. He was 56 - and died Sunday at a hospice at Weiss
Memorial Hospital. No cause of death was confirmed. Marvin joined
the Isleys in 1974. By then, the group was well established with
hits like "Shout," which came out in 1959. He joined a splinter
group in the 1980s, only to return to his family the following
decade.
Marvin Isley's health was what caused him to put down his bass
for good. He had a series of complications from diabetes -
including a stroke, high blood pressure, the loss of both legs -
and the use of his left hand. In a 2001 interview, he told the
Atlanta Journal-Constitution he regretted ignoring the disease. He
said if he knew diabetes like he understood music - he may not have
lost the use of so much of his body.
